Wireless Technology – Following the Taiwan Model

Taiwan has an online computer population of 8.35 million people and 23.7 million mobile phone users. Wireless communication, in addition to internet use, is gaining rapid ground as more people turn towards wireless technology as the low cost access entry to the internet. This article examines the rapid expansion of wireless technology in Taiwan and how the Taiwanese government moves towards making the Island the largest testing ground for WiMax technology.

The government in Taiwan is investing $209 million in funding for WiMax technology, with Intel providing technology support. In 2006 the government has set aside a further $32.8 million in research funds with emphasis on supporting WiMax technology further. WiMax will provide users with high speed internet access and as a result, Taiwan will become a leader in the manufacture and distribution of supporting products such as low cost notebooks with Intel® chip technology, PC cards, and high speed internet access using wi-fi technology. …………….

Taiwan plans on trying to obtain Island wide WiMax network coverage for all of the Island’s population of 23 million people by 2007. The capital city of Taipei already has achieved provision of free wi-fi access to its citizens. …………………..
